    CPI Installs Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer at Aerospace Fastener Mfg

    Catalytic Products International (CPI) installed a new Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) for the abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) at a Western USA manufacturer of precision fastening systems and components used in the aerospace industry.

    This new 4,000 SCFM Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) replaces an older RTO from a competitor which failed to meet the required 95% VOC destruction efficiency (DRE).

    The RTO controls VOC emissions from the application & curing of adhesives and sealants on the fasteners. The multi-step process is conducted in a Permanent Total Enclosure (PTE) which is also vented to the RTO. The new RTO system will destroy VOC emissions from the small parts coating process with 95% destruction efficiency (DRE) at a thermal efficiency of 95%.  The new RTO also utilizes a low NOx burner in order to meet NOx emission limits set by the state air pollution control agency. 

    CPI worked closely with the customer to minimize the downtime associated with the removal of the old oxidizer and installation of the new RTO.  Since this was a replacement of an existing oxidizer, CPI could utilize the existing VOC collection ductwork.  CPI also upgraded the existing filtration system, which reduces the amount of particulate matter entering the RTO, and relocated it from the roof to ground level to provide improved access.

    CPI was able to complete a good portion of the installation activities before the new RTO unit arrived on site for final assembly.  CPI provided on-site supervision to ensure coordination with the customer and third-party sub-contractors. This approach guaranteed that entire system was installed correctly, and the facility was back up and producing product with minimal downtime.   

    Thermal treatment of VOCs and other air pollutants works by a simple reaction of the harmful air pollutants with oxygen and heat. In this environment, the VOCs are converted into harmless inert byproducts, water vapor (H2O), and usable heat. These harmless by-products are typically released to the atmosphere, or in some cases use an energy recovery technique to further lower the operational costs.
