The new 3,600 SCFM enclosed Thermal Combustor System (TCS) will control VOC emissions from reactor vessels with 99% destruction rate efficiency (DRE). The off gas tank emissions contain nitrogen, formaldehyde, methanol, and acetone.
A Thermal Combustor was selected for this application over a thermal oxidizer based on the high LEL (lower explosive limit) of the off gas emissions. According to National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) regulations, a fuel stream being treated by an oxidizer needs to be below 25% of LEL without an LEL monitor. With an LEL monitor, the fuel stream can be up to 50%. The Thermal Combustor System (TCS) utilized as a combustion system can directly process air streams >50% of the LEL with no risk to the integrity of the system as this arrangement uses the heating value of the process off gas as a fuel source.
The TCS thermal combustor utilizes a superior combustion and dwell chamber coupled with a vertical design for efficient combustion of the VOCs. The unique design starts by drawing the solvent laden fumes into the bottom of the internally insulated combustion chamber. As the fumes are forced through the burner the contaminated stream travels down the elongated combustion chamber at very high velocities, causing mixing and turbulence to occur. The smoke, odor and VOCs present are converted to harmless CO2 and water vapor. The stream then discharges above roof level thru the stainless-steel no-loss exhaust stack. Thermal Combustor Systems (TCS) are designed to burn safely or combust hydrocarbon vapor mixtures that have varying energy content where enclosed flares may fail. The TCS combines the simplicity of an enclosed flare with the robustness and proven performance of a thermal oxidizer.
