Flexographic Printer installs TRITON RTO for VOC Control

Catalytic Products International Provides Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) to Flexographics Printer

Catalytic Products International (CPI) recently completed the installation of a new TRITON Series Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) at Formel Industries in Franklin Park, IL for the abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

CPI TRITON 35,000 Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer

Formel is expanding its production capabilities, which includes adding a new flexographic printing press. VOC emissions of N-propyl alcohol and ethyl acetate from their existing coater are currently treated using a catalytic oxidizer. Due to the high solvent concentrations begin introduced, the constant daily cycling of the oxidizer and advanced age of the equipment, the main components of the existing oxidizer are beginning to fail.

This project scope consists of treating emissions from the flexographic printing presses and to improve the ventilation of the existing dryer by increasing the exhaust rate, and adding better close capture systems and floor sweeps to each of the dryer zones. In addition, Formel wanted to include additional sources (ink room and distillation system), which also require VOC abatement.  Based on the information provided by the Formel and after performing process calculations CPI determined that the best solution was to provide a CPI TRITON-30.95 Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) capable of accepting 30,000 SCFM exhaust air. CPI Flexographic Printing RTO Ductwork edit

Catalytic Products International (CPI) took a partnership approach with Formel as it relates to the installation of the RTO.  This means CPI provided the engineering necessary to develop a ductwork drawing package that was used by Formel to obtain quotations from third-party sub-contractors that were then hired direct by Formel to complete the installation.  CPI will guarantee the entire system provided the engineering scope of supply is met.

Due to the long delivery time of the new press and because of the uncertainty as to the longevity of the existing catalytic oxidizer, CPI suggested a “two-phase” installation approach to ensure Formel remained EPA compliant. In the first phase, CPI provided all the necessary ductwork, dampers, and floor sweep system for the existing coater line. The second phase will take place upon arrival of the new printing press and the inclusion of the ink room and distillation area, with CPI providing the remaining engineering required to add those components to the TRITON-30.95 RTO system.

The 30,000 SCFM, TRITON Series Regenerative Thermal Oxidizer (RTO) includes innovative design features allowing for continuous VOC destruction which is not hindered by any operational characteristics.  The systems low cost of operation will center on the use of a nominal 95% primary heat exchanger, utilizing sophisticated TSS control logic which constantly monitors and adjusts the system to maximize thermal efficiency.

Since 1969 CPI has been providing industry leading flexographic printing companies with solutions to their air pollution control needs.

Today, CPI partners with its customers as a trusted resource in resolving the most complex air pollution and energy conservation problems. We provide our customers with innovative and cost-conscious solutions to their most complex VOC, NOx, and Odor pollution challenges. Our equipment is also at work meeting energy conservation strategies and minimizing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
