CPI Installs Thermal Oxidizer at Pharmaceutical Manufacturer

    Catalytic Products International (CPI) recently installed Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer at a Western USA pharmaceutical manufacturer for the abatement of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

    The new Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizer (DFTO) replaces an aging, roof mounted thermal oxidizer system to meet current BACT and low NOx requirements as well as providing a safe and more reliable solution to maintain compliance with Clean Air Act standards. CPI worked closely with the customer and their EPC to supply the thermal oxidizer and provide startup and commissioning services.

    The 1,000 SCFM QUADRANT NR-1.00 Thermal Oxidizer controls the emissions from a pharmaceutical vacuum drying process with 99% destruction rate efficiency (DRE). The highly concentrated solvent vapor stream consists of mixed solvents including toluene, hexane, methanol, acetone, and smaller amounts of ACN, THF, DMF, ethyl acetate, and silica organic solvents.

    Thermal treatment of VOCs and other air pollutants works by the simple reaction of the harmful hydrocarbon-based air pollutants with oxygen and heat. In this environment, the VOCs are chemically oxidized to form harmless inert by-products like CO2, water vapor (H2O), and usable heat. These harmless by-products are released to the atmosphere or used within primary or secondary energy recovery techniques to further lower the operational cost.

    Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizers (DFTO) are affordable pollution control systems to purchase and operate when properly designed and applied appropriately. Direct fired thermal oxidizers require less maintenance than typical pollution control devices with minimal moving parts while offering flexibility to handle different types of inorganic particulate or other contamination, as well as the ability for a high degree of heat recovery and optimization.

    Direct Fired Thermal Oxidizers (DFTO) are used on special applications that have very high solvent concentration levels, low air volumes, high particulate, loading, or high energy demand or secondary heat recovery needs.
